Objectives

Cruse in Birmingham has been in existence since 1977 and provides free bereavement support and counselling to anyone living in the Birmingham area, irrespective of age, race, gender, culture, religion, ethnicity and disability.

There are a number of ways to get involved at Cruse Birmingham i.e. bereavement support, fundraising, general office admin support, data admin, Marketing/PR and event planning.

Our bereavement support volunteers who provide the face to face support service receive rigorous bereavement training. In accordance with best practice, they are allocated to a trained supervisor so that quality of performance is regularly monitored and expertise enhanced. Bereavement support volunteers continually receive in-house training, elements of which are obligatory such as Safeguarding Procedures, and this training ensures provision of a quality service.

All volunteers can expect a warm friendly working environment with comfortable surroundings and helpful staff on hand to assist. Informal enquirers are welcome.

Activities

We provide a wide range of services including:

  • Telephone information and support for clients and professionals
  • One to one support at a range of locations around the city, including our city centre office
  • Facilitated support groups- Seeing someone one to one can feel   daunting, whereas group support can reduce the isolation people feel and encourages peer support. We organise a number of groups including a Bereaved by Suicide group and a Men's Group.
  • Support and advice for bereaved families and young people- Our Youth Worker provides grieving families with support and information so that parents and guardians feel better equiped to support their children through the maze of grief.
  • Information and support for schools - We offer schools support and advice after the school community has experienced the death of a pupil, staff member or parent. We can offer " Bereavement Awareness" workshops for pupils and staff.
  • Training- We can deliver a wide range of training packages depending on the needs of the organisation. We also run " Loss and Bereavement" 1 day courses that can be booked on an individual basis.
