Concrete Rose delivers, and equip others to provide, first-class care and support for the most vulnerable young people (16-21) across Cambridgeshire. In particular, our supported lodgings scheme 'Room to spare' provides safe, stable, and nurturing accommodation placements to young people (16-21) through a network of host families, individuals and couples.
For many young people (especially care leavers, unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC), young offenders leaving custody and those without family support networks) the transition to adulthood is a time of fear, insecurity, and increased vulnerability. This is magnified by a semi-independent accommodation (SIA) environment that is stretched (with demand continuing to grow) and variable in quality with impersonal SIA, - with insufficient professional support for young people - too often accentuating rather than ameliorating risk. As a result, the outcomes for these vulnerable young people remain shockingly poor. For example, care leavers are over-represented in the sex-industry as well as the prison and homeless populations, have significantly worse outcomes in education, and are more likely to have a mental health disorder. Young offenders are twice as likely to have slept rough as those without experience of the prison system and over two thirds of young offenders reoffend within 12 months of release from secure institutions. UASC are more likely to be placed by local authorities in unregulated accommodation settings with many placements deemed substandard and overall, 121,000 young people (16-25) in the UK are homeless or at risk of homelessness, 52% due to family breakdown.
Our supported lodgings scheme 'Room to spare' provides safe, stable, and nurturing accommodation placements to young people (16-21) through a network of host families, individuals and couples. ‘Hosts’ providing a bedroom, a safe environment and love, support and guidance to a young person whilst being able to continue with their daily routines including working, socialising and holidays. Concrete Rose supports hosts through 24/7 on call support and, in turn, young people will be supported by weekly one-to-one sessions with professional youth workers.
The supportive and nurturing environment of these placements enable young people to build firm foundations for the future and make make a gradual transition to adulthood and more independent accommodation placements.
