Objectives

Community Furniture Store (York) is one of three sister charities in North Yorkshire. The others are in Selby and Scarborough. Each is set up as a separate charity but each works to a similar model and comes under a single Chief Officer and Board.

Each store supports people in its local community through:

  • Free collection of unwanted, reuseable furniture and electrical appliances reducing the amount of unnecessary waste
  • Processing and sale of furniture at affordable prices to people in the local community, with discounted prices for those with limited resources, helping to reduce furniture poverty
  • Offering work experience and training opportunities to people facing barriers to employment including people with disabilities and those with an offending history
  • Educating the public about the benefits of reuse

Activities

Community Furniture Stores collect unwanted, reuseable furniture and electrical appliances and after processing we make these available at prices affordable to everyone. Everyone can use our stores but we have a twin pricing system so that people with limited resources can benefit from discounted prices,  typically 30% lower than our standard prices. As part of our work we offer work experience and training opportunities to people that find it hard to secure employment, including people with additional needs and those with an offending history.

During 2018/19 the three stores reused over 19,500 items with a combined weight of almost 450 tonnes preventing unnecessary waste and carbon emissions. Over 4,800 households benefitted from discounted pricing at our Stores, and over 100 people participated in our work experience and training schemes.
