Coldharbour Mill Working Wool Museum in Devon has an experienced and active Trustee body, which is also the Board of Directors of Coldharbour Mill Trust Ltd, a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity.
The Board sets the overall direction of the organisation and ensures that it works in an ethical and financially sound manner to deliver its Objects: (a) to provide for the advancement of public education, in particular in the woollen industry, by the provision of a public working museum, (b) to preserve Coldharbour Mill for the public benefit as a building of historic and architectural value.
Established in 1982 in an 18th century former spinning mill, now a Grade I* listed site, this small independent museum receives no outside financial support, so relies chiefly on donations, grants and self-generated income from admissions and events. The Museum's USP is that it offers visitors opportunities to see demonstrations of the production of yarn and textiles on vintage machinery, and to experience the factory's original power sources – a 19th century waterwheel and 19th/20th century steam engines – in action.
The Museum recently received a substantive grant form the Heritage Lottery Fund to kick-start an ambitious Development Plan, aiming to establish the Museum as the premier textile heritage centre in the South West UK.
The Board of Trustees is looking to expand and recruit new members in order to widen its skill base, share our passion and contribute actively to the future development of the Museum. We are looking for additional Trustees from a range of professional backgrounds with experience and expertise in one or more of these areas:
business management/finance management, marketing/PR/events management, fund-raising/income generation/grant-seeking, heritage management/museum curatorial development, retail, catering, law (to support governance), education (to assist with expanding our schools programme), textile production, engineering, building project management (to support capital developments).
By providing encouragement and leadership, you will help determine our strategic direction by advising and recommending creative solutions to issues.
