Colchester Museums Development Foundation (CMDF) aims to support Colchester Museums Service to inspire and enrich Colchester’s local community, through the preservation, exploration, and sharing of the town’s heritage in its widest sense. CMDF serves four key objectives, to:

  • Increase Colchester Museums’ capacity to offer accessible events and programmes.
  • Provide new opportunities for engaging with Colchester Museums’ collections and research.
  • Support and inform new initiatives across Colchester Museums that involve and reflect the diverse members of our community.
  • Expand Colchester Museums’ reach and impact through collaboration with community groups and businesses.

CMDF achieves these objectives by raising and allocating funding through grants, sponsorship, cash/contactless donations collected in the museums, membership fees, and an Adopt an Object scheme. The Foundation is driven by a dynamic team of trustees with deep roots in the local area, including access consultant Sophie Weaver (CMDF Chair), and the current Portfolio Holder for Heritage in Colchester..

As Colchester Museums continues to grow and evolve, including the upcoming redevelopment of the Natural History Museum, CMDF serves an increasingly key role as a champion and funder of causes that are significant to members of Colchester’s community.
