Objectives

CLEAR is a community action initiative addressing ocean plastic pollution and environmental degradation in Indonesia, which is among the top 5 polluters of plastic to oceans globally. Through education and community mobilisation CLEAR is establishing village recycling centres - known as waste banks - where villagers bring their waste and receive a small income in return. As an innovative development we promote refill stations associated with waste banks. By buying in bulk and adopting a refill model for food and household supplies single-use plastic is avoided and villagers save money. We are widening our impact via dissemination of our model. At the beginning of 2023 CLEAR had established 13 waste banks in the southern coastal region of West Java. CLEAR finds sustainable solutions which engage and mobilise people to take action at a local level to tackle waste management and other environmental challenges.

Activities

CLEAR offers a community-led approach to tackling the challenges of waste pollution and environmental degradation in Indonesia. We facilitate direct action to support protection of the environment through education and community mobilisation. We encourage local people to develop solutions to environmental challenges. By focusing on low-cost, high-impact measures we are achieving changes in awareness and behaviour with low expenditure, making CLEAR initiatives replicable in any community.
