Objectives

Citizens Advice York is an independent local charity.

We provide free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone who lives or works in York on their rights and responsibilities on a wide variety of issues; including welfare benefits, debt, money advice, employment, housing and homelessness, immigration, consumer, relationship breakdown and other legal matters.

Activities

We are an independent local charity affiliated with the national organisation Citizens Advice. We have 30+ volunteers (around 80% of our team), supported by a small professional staff team who run the organisation and provide essential training and supervision.

In 2022-23, we helped 3,784 people with 14,309 issues, plus many more people with quick queries or signposting. The main issues we helped with related to benefits, employment, debt, and housing. However, our ethos is to help everyone whatever the problem, and we also supported people with many other issues.

In 2022-23, we helped people gain £984,891 in income, largely from unclaimed benefits and tax credits. Our clients also had a total of £1,655,669 in debts managed or written off. These are just some examples of how our work makes a tremendous difference to people’s lives.

We depend on volunteers to deliver our mission, meeting with and helping people face to face.  We also rely on volunteers to guide the Charity via our Board of Trustees, who are all local people committed to, and understanding the importance of, our work with the many people in York who need our help.
