Objectives

We are a registered local charity, and we support anyone living or working across the Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead to resolve & manage their own problems by providing free, confidential, impartial and independent  advice over the telephone, in person at our offices or at home for housebound clients.

Often the people we support are already in crisis and dealing with a range of complex and interlinked issues including debt, housing, employment, relationship and consumer problems, and our advice can be life changing.  Advice from our committed team of 60 trained volunteers and 9 part time staff helps people to avoid homelessness, manage to feed their children, lift themselves out of debt and prevent problems escalating.  Research shows that 4 in 5 Citizens Advice clients feel better, with less stress and improved mental health,  after our advice, as in the case of 'Simon':

60 year old ‘Simon’ was made redundant and was worried about his debts.  Without computer skills he couldn’t apply for Job Seekers Allowance online and he felt overwhelmed to the point where he contemplated suicide and started drinking heavily.  We worked with mental health agencies, the Job Centre, the council and utility companies to help Simon reduce his debts, including water rates and council tax by negotiating with creditors on his behalf.  Our intervention has improved Simon’s financial situation and his mental health, and helped him get his life back on track.

Last year we supported over 4000 clients, just like Simon, on over 9,000 issues and helped local people to realise financial gains of £944,269 including claiming the benefits to which they were entitled and improving their financial position by having debts written off or rescheduled.  We also provided 1,600 food vouchers for people who could not feed themselves or their families, enabling them to manage during hard times.

Activities

We provide free, independent, impartial and confidential advice to anyone living or working in The Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead,  over the telephone, online, via email and face to face at our offices in Maidenhead.  We also have a home visiting service providing advice for people who are housebound and isolated.

Our advice is delivered by volunteers who undertake a rigorous training programme and who are supervised and supported by a small but experienced staff team.

We are a local charity responsible for raising all of our own funding in order to maintain our high quality of advice and develop our services to meet the needs of local people.
