Who we are.
chit-chat is a non-profit organisation, creating a casual, inclusive and non-judgmental place for people to have a conversation. Our mission is to provide a platform for people to chat and interact with others, connecting communities through conversation.
Why we do what we do.
From research undertaken, we know that over 9 million people in the UK – almost a fifth of the population – say they are “always” or “often” lonely, but almost two thirds feel uncomfortable admitting it. The numbers of isolated individuals has only grown since lockdown.
Social isolation and loneliness are bigger problems than simply an emotional experience. Lacking social connection is a comparable risk factor for early death as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and is worse for older people than well-known risk factors such as obesity and physical inactivity. Loneliness also increases the likelihood of mortality by 26%.
The power of a meaningful conversation is phenomenal. At chit-chat we are positive and proactive in bringing people together, breaking down barriers and tackling loneliness and isolation. After all, 69% of adults in Britain said they felt happier after having a conversation with somebody (YouGov, 2019).
Our beneficiaries.
At chit-chat there’s a conversation for everyone. Labels shouldn’t define you. Regardless of your gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, background or interests, we’re here to have a proper “chit-chat”. Everyone is welcome. Everyone’s voice should be heard.
How we are having an impact.
In our first 4 months, chit-chat has connected with over 215,000 people on social media, chatted to over 450 people, recruited and trained over 40 volunteers. We’re here to promote positive mental health and well-being by connecting communities across the country.
What we do.
chit-chat is a growing social media platform and our core service is the chit-chat LINE, coordinated by our team of over 40 trained volunteers from 9am until 9pm daily. The phone line is available to anyone who fancies a chat. chit-chat serves to solve a growing issue in modern society. In a world where connectivity is more integrated than ever before, so many people feel as though they have no-one to talk to. We’re here to fill a gap in need in the UK and offer a way for people to simply have a chat.
