Objectives

CatBytes aim is to assist those who are digitally excluded. Digital exclusion arises not only from the inability to access digital technology, but also an unwillingness to, due to fear of the internet and digital technology in general. We are also interested in ways that the digital technology can be used to tackle social exclusion. We view digital exclusion as a form of social exclusion.

Our beneficiaries include the elderly and people with visual impairment, to whom we provide training. We also give support to micro-businesses and community organisations. Many small organisations and micro-businesses have limited access to people with professional knowledge of IT. We can provide this at a low cost, and with an understanding personal approach.

Activities

  • We run techy tea clubs, which are social clubs where elderly people sit with volunteers, who we call buddies, and get help with whatever they are interested in learning about with their tablets or laptops.
  • We build and host websites for small community organisations and micro-businesses.
  • We perform a range of IT related tasks, such as network troubleshooting, software installation and ICT suite set-up.
  • We provide training in software packages like Microsoft Office and Wordpress.
