Objectives

Castle Point Social Car Scheme (CPSCS) is a registered charity providing a safe and accessible transport service to those residents of Castle Point who, for reasons of age, health or disability, are unable to drive themselves, or to easily access alternative transport. The service we offer is more personal, giving our members a little independence without having to rely on relatives and friends. It is an affordable, predictable and reliable service, much appreciated by our members.

Our members would otherwise would have to rely on family, friends and neighbours, and often would rather suffer than impose on others. This can lead to depression and poor physical or mental health, which in turn increases their isolation. We offer a way out of this - a subsided transport scheme using volunteers' vehicles, or our wheelchair-accessible mobility cars, to take people to the shops, hospital, social trips, even on holiday - if fact wherever they want to go. In addition we operate minibuses with disability/wheelchair access for social outings for our members and for subsidised hire by welfare groups for their members to meet at social events.

Around 1000 members use CPSCS and last year our volunteer car and mobility car drivers completed 13138 journeys carrying 16,205 clients a total of 92,238 miles.

Activities

We use volunteers’ cars, plus 3 mobility cars that take one wheelchair and up to three passengers, and three minibuses. Drivers give a personal one-to-one service - meeting clients at their door.

Drivers usually wait for up to 2 hours or give clients the option to ring for the return journey when appointments are long - such as day surgery, eye appointments etc.
