Objectives

Our charity exists to provide an accessible, progressive education for 2-16 year olds in the Cambridgeshire region.  We currently operate 3 kindergartens (2-6 year olds); a lower school (6-14 year olds) and an upper school (14-16 year olds).  In the current climate of high mental health issues amongst young people and an ecological crisis that threatens their futures, the need for alternative educational models is vital.  Our children benefit from a distinctive arts-based, experiential learning that puts academic learning in a healthier perspective, emphasising the importance of our interdependence with the natural world and with each other.

Activities

Our activities include the work of our Early Years Department, our Upper and Lower Schools as well as holiday clubs, professional development programmes, and community and educational outreach work. Our kindergartens meet the standards of the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage through a curriculum that integrates all subject areas within a day-to-day rhythm and the yearly flow of seasonal changes and major festivals.  Formal concepts are not taught but basic skills of numeracy and literacy constantly arise in day-to-day storytelling, songs, rhymes, puppet shows and the personal interaction of each child taking part in physical activities such as cleaning, baking, food preparation, stacking, sorting, collecting, gathering, counting, clapping and game playing. Painting, modelling, drawing and handwork such as sewing and weaving and craft activities are central to a Steiner Waldorf Kindergarten. These play an important role in developing fine motor skills in the child. Problem-solving skills again are not fostered through formal instruction but primarily through the problems that naturally arise in a child's play.  The importance of the imagination and the outdoors, so central to the Kindergarten, is carried through the Lower and Upper Schools where our broad curriculum is designed to meet each child’s evolving capabilities.  We consider learning to be the development of applicable knowledge-based skills. Through the primary years, our teaching respects the emotional life of children, supporting their imagination and creativity as they engage with formal ideas and practices.  Our Upper School is pioneering a new GCSE-equivalent certificate that continues the integrated approach of learning established  in the Lower School.   We support parents and anyone interested in the school through talks and craft groups and develop the school through seasonal fundraising events and activities.
