Objectives

We are a 1.2 acre community garden in Kings Cross. Our gates are open 7 days a week. Our aim is to enable local people to improve their quality of life.

Activities

Calthorpe Community Garden is recognised as an inner-city oasis. The Garden brings together people of different ages, cultures, and abilities to enjoy open green space and recreational facilities in the concrete centre of London. Open seven days a week, we have more than 30,000 visits to our garden every year, in addition to those who attend events and take part in our programmed activities. We operate a model of sustainable food growing, with a “living lab” incorporating a closed loop food cycle, vegetarian cafe and waste recycling facility that provides environmental education and practical hands-on skills training for students, educators and researchers. These programmes flow together forming an interactive community which cares for and benefits from their award-winning garden.

Our staff provide direct service to 1,000 of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the local area annually, improving their physical and emotional wellbeing, and increasing their skills and knowledge. Calthorpe Community Garden offers:

  • A supported volunteering and horticultural training programme for people with learning disabilities, mental health issues and physical challenges.
  • Supervised environmental activities for children aged 0-14 and their families.
  • Sports development including coaching and training for young people.
  • Community classes and activities with partner organisations the Mary Ward Centre and Explorer Scouts.
