The award-winning Calderdale Industrial Museum is located in central Halifax, close to such well-known attractions as the Piece Hall, the Minster, and the Square Chapel Arts Centre.
Originally operated by Calderdale Council, the Museum was closed for over a decade before being revived by a group of committed and enthusiastic volunteers, who restored it to a condition where it could be re-opened to the public, and continue to work towards making it one of the most inviting and rewarding cultural destinations in the region. We currently have about 90 active volunteers and 250 members.
Our aim is to tell the stories of how the many industries that developed in the Calder Valley in the 18th and 19th centuries helped shape the wider world. We do this through both the imaginative display and interpretation of the many fascinating objects in our collections (from the small to the very large), and also by fostering a high level of interaction between our knowledgeable volunteers and our visitors. Beyond that, we have a very active outreach programme with the local educational sector and other groups, we work with a range of local project partners on a variety of initiatives, and we run a successful shop and cafe.
