The Butterfly Trust provides support to people affected by Cystic Fibrosis throughout Scotland. Cystic Fibrosis is a progressive, life limiting condition that causes chronic lung disease and digestive problems. People affected by Cystic Fibrosis require an intensive daily treatment regime, carried out at home, that is physically and mentally demanding. They live with high levels of stress, increased financial costs from special dietary requirements, inflated heating costs and travel to hospital and constant awareness of the long term implications of their condition.
We provide services that help improve the quality of life for these young people by relieving stress levels, alleviating financial hardship and increasing life choices for these people. Our trained volunteers deliver outreach services that include emotional support at times of distress, practical help e.g. to complete official forms, transport to hospital appointments; advocacy to negotiate access to safe and suitable housing, appropriate support in education, flexible arrangements in employment for those able to work and access to disability related benefits; mentoring for young people who have Cystic Fibrosis and massage therapy in hospital for young people with advanced stage illness.
