Objectives

Burwell Museum and Windmill is a largely volunteer-run, independent community museum in the heart of Burwell, a lively village of around 8000 residents. The Museum is open from Easter-October on Thursdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays, 11am-5pm. From 2012- 2015 the museum and windmill received Heritage Lottery funding to further develop its facilities and programmes. The Museum now has a growing visitor base of around 3000 visitors each season and is working hard to secure the positive legacies of its recent development project.

The Museum's mission states: 'The object of Burwell Museum Trust Limited is to advance the education of the public in the history of Burwell by the provision of a museum and relevant on and off-site outreach activities.’

Activities

The Museum and windmill has an active events programme aimed at a wide range of audiences, chiefly children and families, older adults, adult learners in special interest groups and schools. As well as a monthly 'main' event during the open season, the museum also runs weekend windmill tours, art classes, exhibitions, under 5s story workshops and volunteer social activities throughout the year. From 2012, the museum further developed its outreach activities in the community e.g. library talks and partnered events, and looks to further increase activity in this area.

The Museum also has an active 'Friends' organisation who raise funds for site maintenance, project work and staffing costs by hosting coffee mornings, jumble sales, coach trips, Easter egg and pumpkin hunts, craft fairs and an annual fete.
