Burmantoftsis an inner-city area of Leeds and is amongst the most deprived areas in the country:
Who we are and what we do…….
Burmantofts Senior Action CIO(BSA) has provided services and activities for older people in its catchment area of Burmantofts, Lincoln Green, Ebor Gardens and part of Harehills since 1994, under an umbrella charity (1051368).
BSA has always worked to enhance the quality of life of older people (aged 60+) helping them live independent lives in their own homes for a long as possible.
Many of those we support live-in high-rise flats which can be very isolating, particularly with a disability, and can contribute to depression, social isolation and poor access to services.
We are seeing an increasing number of referrals with complex needs, including dementia, social isolation, bereavement, depression and mental health issues, including hoarding behaviours and self-neglect, frailty and mobility issues. A high proportion of older people living in the area have some level of disability, often related to the cumulative effects of long-term poverty and poor housing.
Our focus is on enhancing the quality of life of the individuals living within our catchment area by providing a mix of services, support and activities which:
Our service delivery offering includes the following:
We have good working links with, and take referrals from, statutory and voluntary organisations in the area. We work in partnership with other services, actively seeking opportunities to strengthen community by providing volunteering opportunities, friendships and a sense of belonging.
As one of 35 Local Neighbourhood Network Schemes serving the senior (60+) community across Leeds, BSA has the support of Leeds City Council Adult Social Care, which is committed to supporting BSA for a minimum of the next 5 years.
We have a small service delivery staff team (the majority of which are part time roles) including a Scheme Manager, a Volunteer and Activities Coordinator, an Outreach worker and a Community Support Worker. We also have around 30 volunteers who give their time and energy to help manage and deliver our services and activities.
