Objectives

Buckinghamshire Disability Service (BuDS) is a registered charity, and working community, run by disabled people for disabled people. Our mission is to break down barriers and create lasting change so that all disabled people can live independent, fulfilling lives.

We support anyone with a disability or long-term health condition, along with their families and carers. Disabled people can access our services, volunteer with us, or both.

Our key priorities include:

  • Helping disabled people live and travel independently
  • Making events and public spaces accessible
  • Supporting disabled people into work
  • Improving access to health, care and support services
  • Providing essential information, advice, and guidance

Activities

Our priority areas of work include helping people live and travel independently, ensuring disabled people can access local events and supporting disabled people into work and providing benefits advice. We form strategic delivery partnerships with a very wide range of council, NHS, business and voluntary sector bodies to deliver the largest impact.

Our projects include:

  • Reach4Work: A volunteer employability programme which provides a flexible and inclusive environment for volunteers to improve, lead or create new projects to help disabled people in their community. We actively support volunteers by mentoring and tailoring their role, so they get the skills and experience they need. We also give references and will doour best to put them in touch with employers.

  • Accessible Everywhere: Our main accessibility project, looking at improving accessibility and inclusion for disabled people with all impairment types. Parking, streets, parks, public buildings, transport and shops all fall within the scope of this very busy project. It also includes our Fair4All Events projects. BuDS supported 36 major events across Bucks to become more accessible and inclusive for disabled people, from Armed Forces Day to major music festivals.

  • Information, Advice & Guidance: We provide reliable, practical information on benefits, employment rights, accessible travel, and social care, helping disabled people navigate complex systems.

  • Health & Social Care Advocacy: We work to improve local health and care services, ensuring disabled people’s voices shape decision-making and services are inclusive.
