The British Racing School is purpose built centre of excellence for training in the racing industry. It sits just outside Newmarket on a 100 acre site which is home to 80 retired racehorses. Each year approximately 180 young people are trained here to go on to apprenticeships in racing yards all over the UK. Some of these trainees have never ridden or even handled a horse before they arrive and after spending 18 weeks on a residential course they are ready to progress as Racing Grooms.
The School also trains jockeys, racehorse trainers, assistant trainers, yard managers, racing secretaries and much more. As a charity, it commits to training any young person regardless of background or financial means. In 2018 it was rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and ethos of the school is to do the best for every young person who comes through the door. Not everyone will become a jockey but the school is about much than riding horses, the trainees learn to cook, look after their finances and study Maths and English alongside horse care. Visitors and potential trainees are welcome to visit the British Racing School on one of their regular Open Days.
