BWP is a small but ambitious charity that supports women, children and young people affected by domestic abuse, with almost 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 children experiencing abuse, we have a huge task on our hands. We provide a holistic wrap around support service to women at all stages of their healing journey from crisis intervention to those experiencing the PTSD from historical abuse, including outreach, counselling and wellbeing activities.
We are passionate about raising awareness of domestic abuse, so work across the community locally and nationally through social media to increase understanding, and engage with children and young people to prevent domestic abuse in the future. In addition, we work nationally with businesses to help them embed domestic abuse policies and provide awareness raising sessions to their staff and managers so that they are better supported.
Without specialist support the impact of domestic abuse can last a lifetime that can cause long-term mental health issues and low self-esteem and lack of confidence, self-harming, substance misuse and attempt or actual suicide. In children the impact can be similar but impacts on their behaviours, perceptions, concentration, achievements and causes a range of mental health issues as children do not stop loving their abusive parent, they internalise it.
We provide women's outreach which includes emotional and practical support, counselling and a range of wellbeing programmes for healthier mind and body, that support food poverty and upskill women, and we deliver a bespoke training programme to survivors to help them understand and process their experiences. We provide outreach to children and young people and engage in the community to raise awareness of domestic abuse and help them to understand what it is, how to identify a healthy and unhealthy relationship. We deliver training to businesses to increase understanding of domestic abuse and to support them to embed domestic abuse policies and procedures to better support staff.
