Objectives

Bromley Mencap is an award winning, user-led, front-line independent organisation with 1,000 members. We promote the well-being and development of disabled people of all ages in all areas of their lives and support their families in supporting them.

A key part of our mission is to ensure that the general public or community are aware of the potential, wishes and concerns of disabled people, and accept them as individuals with rights to be respected and contributions to make in their local community.

Bromley Mencap has been recognised by 9 awards in the last 10 years: Guardian Public Services Award for Carers and Families 2011 (winner), Intu Property Chairman’s Corporate Social Responsibility Prize 2013 (winner), the Children and Young People Now Awards 2012 (shortlisted), Charity Times Charity of the Year 2013 (shortlisted), National Learning Disability Awards 2014 (shortlisted), Business Excellence Awards 2015 (winner), Best Self-Funded Charity – Business Awards 2015 (winner), Bromley Business Awards 2018 (finalist) and Activities 4 Kids, Best Loved Charity Award for our Young Carers Service (winner).

A Summary Report on our activities in the last financial year can be found here

We are particularly effective because we are member/user led. All our services and activities are researched, consulted, developed, defined, planned and implemented with our users (we received an Award of Excellence for User Involvement in 2004). We do this through a separate independent Users Forum and a special Young Disabled Person’s Focus Group, all of which provide input into our services.  We represent the views of our members and campaign for their equality.

In 2010 we merged with local Bromley Scope and changed our Constitution to also provide services to people with physical disabilities. The local Disability Voice group joined with us in 2014.

We additionally have close working partnerships with local schools and businesses and community groups.
We also have the following Quality Standards:

- The Advice Quality Standard (AQS), the quality standard for providers of general advice services in the areas of social, welfare and public law.

- Investors in People, a recognition that an organisation looks to improve performance and realise objectives through the management and development of its people.

- DWP Disability Confident, which supports employers to make the most of the talents disabled people can bring to the workplace and the Kent Business Mark.
