Bromley Experts by Experience was set up to meet national government guidelines that recommend that every local authority area should have at least one independent user led organisation on the model of a centre for independent living. There was no significant mechanism for disabled people in Bromley to feed their views in local, regional or national consultations or to get their voices heard covering health, social services and benefits changes.
Employing local disabled people and in particular offering meaningful employment opportunities to disabled young people in Bromley is one of our key aims which we seek to achieve through how we deliver our work.
We tendered for and were awarded contracts by the local Council to run projects for the benefit of local disabled people. One of these was to research set up and manage facilities in an independent living centre providing information and advice for disabled people about the aids and equipment available to them.
We have set up an accessible information service so that information about issues of importance to local Deaf and disabled people and carers are available in formats and in media people can access, including a website, facebook page, films and an easy read newsletter.
