Objectives

The BLS is registered charity, the purpose of which is to preserve and protect good health of people living with lymphoedema / chronic oedema. Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic drainage system fails; chronic oedema is indicative of failure of lymphatic drainage. There are more than 450,000 people living with lymphoedema in the UK that we know about, however we believe that there are many more living with this condition who are yet to be diagnosed.

Activities

Our priorities are raising awareness of the condition in the medical community and general public, and strengthening the body evidence for best practice lymphoedema treatment. We do this through:

  • advancing education and knowledge in the field of lymphology and related subjects
  • fostering interest in and co-ordinating a strategy for improving the management of chronic oedema, particularly lymphoedema
  • maintaining a register of specialist centres in the United Kingdom and Ireland
  • improving the knowledge, expertise and skills of health care professionals treating them
