The Bookplate Society actively promotes the study and collecting of bookplates (exlibris). Many of the Society’s members have interests in adjacent fields eg Family & Local History, Heraldry, Genealogy, Printing, Art of the Book, Bibliography & Provenance, Engraving, Graphic Art.
Founded in 1972, the Society publishes a high-quality journal to members, newsletters & 2-yearly book. It is hosting an international congress at a Cambridge college in August 2020. The direct descendant of an earlier society founded in 1891, this registered charity has 250 members in the UK and abroad. Study of bookplates is promoted by a twice-yearly high-quality 72-page journal, by newsletters and a new book every two years. Three members’ auctions each year help to foster knowledge and interest in collecting. The annual membership subscription offers good value and the Society is soundly financed. Except for graphic design and printing, which are contracted out, the Society is run only by volunteers. In August 2020 the Society is taking over a Cambridge College for a 4-day conference, with 400+ participants expected from 30+ countries. The programme includes lectures, an auction, visits to historic houses, and two exhibitions. Any surplus on running this conference will be split 50/50 between a donation to Cancer Research UK and the Society’s project to establish a significant online database.
