Objectives

Bookmark Reading is a charity helping children develop the reading skills they need to succeed in school and beyond by creating flexible volunteering at the heart of our communities. More than 1 in 4 children leave primary school in England each year unable to read to the expected standard which can hugely affect their life chances. We want to change this. We link vetted and trained volunteers to children who need extra support. Our digital app makes it easy for schools and volunteers to arrange sessions at times and dates that work for everyone. By working together, we can help change a child's story.

Activities

Our volunteers deliver Bookmark's six-week reading programme which consists of two 30-minute sessions each week at a local primary school. These one-to-one sessions involve word games alongside guided reading, helping children to improve their literacy rates whilst learning to enjoy reading.

The Bookmark app matches schools with fully safeguarded, vetted and trained reading volunteers from within the community, at the click of a button. Schools have flexibility to decide which children will take part in the programme and for how long (six weeks, twelve weeks, or more).

On the Bookmark App volunteers can link up with schools and select sessions at times and dates that work for them, making it easy to fit volunteering around other commitments.

Bookmark provides full training, which is a combination of online and face to face sessions. This is designed to prepare and empower volunteers to effectively support the development of child’s love of reading and literacy through shared reading, and ensure the health, safety and well-being of both the volunteer and children they read with. We also have community managers on hand to offer our volunteers and schools ongoing support.
