As London’s oldest charity for blind and visually impaired people, BlindAid has worked to improve quality of life and promotes independence for isolated Londoners with a visual impairment for 188 years. We provide individualised practical and emotional support to reduce the social isolation that many people living with a visual impairment can experience. Our services are free at the point of use, and are a mix of community based (face to face), online and telephone based support. We aim to reduce social isolation, increase independence and improve levels self-confidence for our beneficiaries.
BlindAid's core service is our Sight Support Service - which provides outreach support to isolated, blind and visually impaired people living in the 12 inner London Boroughs. This support is delivered via an exceptional team of carefully selected, DBS checked and skilled Sight Support Workers, who provide emotional and practical support to over 1100+ service users each year, improving quality of life and promoting independence/confidence.
In addition, BlindAid has over 200 DBS checked volunteers who support service users to access their local communities for social activities via our Big Lottery funded Share London Social Project.
We also run a Community Project in Camden which is funded by The City Bridge Trust for 3 years. We provide free classes in IT, safe cooking/healthy eating, yoga, art and creative writing, allowing services users to learn new skills, and refresh old ones. The project is also designed and managed to encourage peer support and to increase the social networks of attendees.
