Objectives

Black Academic Network (BAN) was set up with the aim of positioning black academics within UK universities front and centre in terms of inclusion and recognition. Black academics statistically are under-represented within the academy and are most often employed on a temporary, fixed-term or part-time basis. This precarity means that black academics lack access to training, professional development opportunities, peer networks, and institutional support that is needed to be successful academics in the UK.

BAN provides black academics with access to opportunities and support which aid not only their academic careers but also provides (holds) the space where they can be their authentic selves in an empowering environment.

Activities

*BAN provides black academics with a supportive peer support network enabling them to gain support, forge networks and make professional and academic contacts.

* BAN provides our members with access to exclusive publishing networks by providing insider information to boost academic publishing and enable potential publishing networks to be made.

* BAN provides higher education institutions with a direct link to black academic talent creating a meaningful partnership between the membership group and the institution.

* BAN provides black academics with a platform to be represented and recognised on our social media and communication channels.

* Through our campaigning and work, we work to provide our members with coaching and training to build their capacities where their institutions may be failing.

* BAN understands that black academics frequently miss out on opportunities for funds and grants, we, therefore, campaign to provide opportunities to enable some of our members to access funds that they would not otherwise be able to access without our help.
