Objectives

Big Up Communities is a not for profit organisation committed to giving a voice, through filmmaking and mixed media art projects with all ages and abilities. We aim to identify and address social issues that affect communities, with a focus on underrepresented and marginalised members. Each project is tailored specifically to meet the needs and interests of the group. We use filmmaking, art, sport and creative play activities as tools that empower, engage and inspire. We previously worked on an outreach basis, in London and the Home Counties. But our recent partnership with The Stewarts Road Adventure Playground means that we now base our youth provision on the Playground Site.  We aim to create a community hub for young people and their families in Lambeth. All of these projects will aim to: Address contemporary urban issues in London, Teach skills in digital technology and filmmaking, Develop the creative potential of socially excluded groups, through multi – faceted art projects, Combine and develop existing talents with skills in new media and give London communities, representation and a voice, Give participants influence over the message and subjectivity of the end product Exhibit work and each finished project to those involved and the wider community, To raise awareness and bring social issues to the fore. The organisation is committed to equal opportunities and aims to be open and accessible to all, without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation or disability.

Activities

Big Up Communities specifically tailors each project depending on the wants, needs and aims of the group. We use filmmaking, art and drama as tools to engage and support personal growth. We have recently gone into partnership with an Adventure Playground and community garden. We will now be based onsite in SW8. This partnership will be enable us to expand our list of activities and target groups to include gardening, open gate adventure play, SEN specific youth clubs, Youth Panel Podcasts, Healthy relationship workshops, Cooking and homework clubs, Sport and fitness session. All our activities are free or extremely low cost as we work with families with very low incomes.
