Objectives

The Betjeman Society was established in 1988 to advance the appreciation of the work of the poet, writer, broadcaster and conservationist Sir John Betjeman (1906-84). We also exist to inform and inspire our members and the wider public through the study, awareness and enjoyment of his life, work and influence, both in the United Kingdom and internationally.

Activities

We are increasingly focusing on Betjeman's role as conservation campaigner as more and more buildings and landscape are threatened by badly designed and unconsidered development. We want to be the 'go to' organisation for matters Betjeman and are re-positioning the Society for more campaigning and raising public awareness of Betjeman as a pioneer in conservation. The poetry and his writings remain a priority for us to promote especially in schools where poetry appears to be under threat. We have commissioned lesson plans based on Betjeman's poems (see website) and want to publish more guides to his writing.
