Objectives

Our overall aim is to improve the lives of older people living in Bedford and the surrounding villages of Bedfordshire, playing a key role in their health and wellbeing and helping them to remain independent for as long as possible.

There are currently just under 500 people benefiting from our activities and services on a regular basis, ranging in age from 50 to 90 plus and, on a typical day, about 100 people will visit us.  All older people are welcomed regardless of their social or economic status, ethnicity or gender.

Activities

We provide a range of activities, services and support on a daily basis, throughout the year.

We help by –

  • Providing a wide range of therapeutic and physical activities, for example art classes, craft workshops, tai chi, dancing and whist drives, amongst many others.
  • Offering personal services which are important to our service users such as hairdressing for both men and women, foot care and holistic therapies to reduce pain and stress.
  • Providing a café service. Food and refreshments are offered every day between 10am and 4pm, along with a take-away service if required.
  • Promoting healthy and independent living by providing information relating to diet, keeping warm in winter and managing finances on a budget.
  • Promoting opportunities to enjoy short holidays with help and support. This is particularly valued by those who are unable to travel without assistance due to disability or lack of confidence.
  • Offering much needed friendship and a sense of belonging in the wider community.

Resulting impact –

  • People are less isolated
  • More likely to be socially engaged with the wider community
  • Have an increased sense of wellbeing
  • Less likely to need support from statutory sources.
