Bedford Credit Union (BCU) is a not-for-profit financial co-operative owned and controlled by its members. BCU was established in 1998 and has grown such that adult membership now exceeds 1800, with 1100 junior members.
We offer savings and affordable loans to our members who live and/or work in our Common Bond area, which is Bedford and the surrounding area in North and Central Bedfordshire.
We are looking after members’ savings in excess of £1.25m and have a loan book in excess of £500k. We encourage regular savings and thrift together with the provision of loans that are sensibly priced and affordable, enabling our members to avoid loan sharks and high interest lenders.
Our main office is in Bedford town center and we have collection points in other areas and we organise regular savings clubs with several schools.
BCU has community service at its heart and as such we involve volunteers in the running of the office, cashiering and carrying out many of the key functions of the business.
We encourage, and provide facilities for, regular saving and thrift. We aim to educate our members in money management and offer access to local debt counselling services. Bedford Credit Union is run by the effects of a group of local people who have come together with the aim of taking practical action against poverty.
