Run entirely by volunteers and totally non-political, BEACONS is the Development Education Centre for Herefordshire and Worcestershire, a registered charity and one of a national network of DECs which are officially authorised, but not funded by government. Working with schools and adult organisations, we believe we can play a part in making the world a fairer and safer place for everyone. For nearly 30 years, we have been raising awareness of the needs of developing countries and of the great challenges facing humanity such as poverty, climate change and equality.
Our dedicated Resource Centre, providing ethnic dress and artefacts, helping children understand and respect different cultures and the challenges faced by children in the developing world. Working with local schools, providing both tailored lessons on sustainability and supporting development education teacher-training. Our ongoing programme of seminars and conferences, spotlighting some of the most important challenges facing humanity - climate change, fairness, equality and diversity, and migration. And by providing speakers and subject matter experts to adult organisations, including Rotary, Probus and U3A. Our website - a free-to-all resource covering a range of topics and including our regularly updated “Guides to Climate Change”, free to download.
