Objectives

BEACON supports people seeking asylum in the city of Bradford and surrounding areas. Our vision is that the Bradford district becomes a hospitable community where people seeking asylum and refugees are welcome, enjoy access to justice and fair treatment and are supported on their journey to independence and integration. We work with people to provide critical support in a time of great need. The work we do meets fundamental human needs including safety and shelter, social connection and the crucial provision of access to specialist legal advice and support. We believe in restoring dignity and empowerment to enable people to move forward with rebuilding their lives free from fear and persecution.

Activities

We deliver 3 projects which focus on meeting the needs of people seeking asylum who are at risk of destitution:

  • Hosting – asylum seekers are prevented from rough sleeping through the provision of free temporary accommodation in local volunteer households
  • CHAT English Club - a free weekly English conversation and activities group providing a welcoming and safe space to improve English language skills, boost confidence, and build social networks
  • McKenzie Friends – trained volunteers offer legal support to asylum seekers left to navigate a complex asylum system alone, providing advocacy and support to access legal advice and representation
