Objectives

BASPCAN is a charity which has been driving improvement in child protection for nearly 40 years by working with professionals in the field to influence policy and practice. We provide access to research; quality and affordable CPD; and peer support to anyone working in child protection.

Our aims are:

  • To promote increased understanding of the causes, ways of identifying and reducing the incidence of child abuse and neglect
  • To encourage a greater understanding of the consequences for children of abuse and neglect and how these can be prevented and treated
  • To improve cooperation and liaison between professionals and agencies locally, nationally, and internationally
  • To influence policy and practice based on high quality research evidence and practitioner experience
  • To represent, support, and advocate for child protection professionals

Activities

Our activities fall into four strands: Events, Supporting Research, Networking & Support, Influence & Representation

Events: We run a programme of conferences, advanced practitioner workshops, commissioned courses, ad hoc and partnership events to support the training, knowledge, skills and CPD of child protection professionals.  In addition we run an international triennial Congress.

Networking & Support:  We offer membership of a community of professionals to share experience and provide peer support.  We are developing online communities and special interest groups to develop this further.

Influence and Representation:  We engage with and respond to government and other policy consultations in the field of child protection, child abuse and neglect, safeguarding, and looked after children.  We facilitate round table discussions on key topics and publish a number of reports.

Supporting research:  We publish a journal "Child Abuse Review" showcasing cutting edge research in child protection as well as a specific CPD section for practitioners.  We also run an annual scholarship fund for practitioners undertaking research on child abuse and neglect.
