Baseless Fabric Theatre brings opera and theatre directly into public spaces to give everyone an opportunity to experience art forms that they might not ordinarily have the opportunity or initial desire to experience, and to shed new light on the piece performed by giving it additional resonance in a real-life public space. These site-specific and promenade performances aim to inspire everyone to see the art forms and the world around them in new ways.
Baseless Fabric Theatre promotes and advances education and appreciation of the arts for the public benefit, with particular but not exclusive reference to the dramatic arts and music.
We run an extensive outreach programme with free workshops for local primary and secondary schools, partnering with the local music education hub and a local childrens' charity, to inspire and educate young people about the arts in a fun and accessible way ensuring everyone from all backgrounds have the opportunity to learn about these art forms.
We also run sessions at elderly lunchclubs so that the elderly not physically able to follow our high street performances are still able to engage with our work.
We are committed to embedding our work within our local area in London Borough of Merton, South London, as well as raising our national profile for unique and innovative work.
We passionately believe theatre and music have the power to build community and transform society. We've been described as "a unique company that creates unique experiences" (Everything Theatre).
We create unique theatre and opera performances with professional artists of the highest standard, while keeping the ticket prices low or completely free. These performances take place directly in public spaces to give everyone an opportunity to experience art forms that they might not ordinarily have the opportunity or initial desire to experience, including our innovative free unticketed 'street operas'. We partner with local businesses by performing in their premises in order to bring people into spaces they might not otherwise visit.
We partner with our local music education hubs, Merton Music Foundation and Wandsworth Music Services to offer complimentary workshops in local primary and secondary schools to teach young people about opera and theatre in a fun, modern and accessible way. We often partner with local childrens' charity Jigsaw4u ensuring these opportunities reach young people from the most disadvantaged backgrounds in our home borough of Merton.
We partner with local elderly organisations to run sessions at elderly lunchclubs so that the elderly not physically able to follow our high street performances are still able to engage with our projects.
We offer opportunities to local individuals of all ages to be involved in our professional productions as volunteers. This creates community cohesion by bringing together people of all ages, backgrounds and parts of the borough in the excitement of being part of bringing a professional production to life. In particular we partner with the local arts college, Wimbledon College of Art, by offering their students their first professional credit.
We are committed to embedding our work within our local area in London Borough of Merton, South London, as well as raising our national profile for unique and innovative work. Our 2017 Cosi Fan Tutte Street Opera gained 5 star reviews and was a finalist for Best Opera Production at the OffWestEnd Awards. We are aiming for our current street opera Die Fledermaus to have similar success both locally and in the opera industry.
