Objectives

Bag Books is a UK registered charity supporting people with learning disabilities through the provision of multi-sensory books and storytelling. Founded in 1993, Bag Books is the only charity in the world publishing multi-sensory books for people with severe or profound and multiple learning disabilities.

Bag Books are aimed at those who cannot benefit from mainstream books. They can be enjoyed without being understood as they are told interactively through voice and emotion rather than words and pictures. They are designed for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (a maximum developmental age of 18 months), people with severe learning disabilities (a maximum developmental age of 6 years) or people with severe autistic spectrum disorders. They are also hugely beneficial to those with visual and hearing impairments.

Activities

Every Bag Book is handmade and takes an average of seven hours to make. In addition to a team of skilled craft artists making the books, Bag Books is fortunate to benefit from the help of over one hundred volunteers.

Bag Books’ volunteers assist with a wide range of craft skills from knitting, sewing and sawing to painting, sticking and drilling. They are invaluable and help to keep down the cost of book production.
