Awamu works with networks of determined women in the slums of Kampala to change the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children through education and skills training.
London & Bristol
Awamu is both London and Bristol based – you can buy from our awesome shop wherever you are in the world and join us for our awesome events in London or Bristol including films nights from the Magic Lantern team and seasonal pop-up shops.
We work in a three-way partnership with ActionAid International Uganda and women’s groups in Bwaise and Makerere to address the issues faced by the most vulnerable children and women in their community – including education, economic empowerment, women’s and children’s rights and hunger.
Bwaise is one of the poorest areas in the city of Kampala. This slum area is built on wetlands so families here find their homes overtaken by water at least 2-3 times a year which inevitably brings with it disease and death. In Bwaise we work hand in hand with the amazing Tusitukirewamu women’s group.
Awamu Kids Smiling Kampala
The issues faced by children and women in the slums around Makerere include sexual and domestic violence, insanitary conditions. In Makerere we work with the wonderful volunteers at Makerere Women’s Association.
