Special Interest Social Groups (Ages 11-25)
Our special interest groups run for young people on the autism spectrum as we know that many are isolated at home with few or no friends or opportunities for socialising. We do know that when they are given the chance to talk about or take part in activities that are related to their special interests or obsessions, then that can be powerfully motivating for them to try new experiences.
Parent Support
While the special interest groups are taking place, we will be offering a separate welcoming space for parents to meet as well. This addresses the needs for the young people who may feel anxious at the start and who may need the reassurance of a parent to begin with. It also offers parents the opportunity to talk with autism professionals who have many years’ experience of one to one and group support work. We also know that parents enjoy meeting up with each other to share the joys and challenges of having a family member with autism. Relevant and local information will be available for signposting. Regular parent training will be offered at the same time as required or requested by them.
Training
We have a team of qualified autism trainers, most of whom are parents of young people or adults on the spectrum. We offer a range of courses aimed at those working in the community, in educational or other settings, as well as parents and carers.
We strongly believe that autism training is key to improving understanding of the condition which in turn can help prevent some of the difficulties people on the spectrum experience with their emotional well-being.
