Attic Theatre Company is an arts organisation, which has been resident in the London Borough of Merton for over 25 years. Originally conceived to stage theatre productions we have since developed a long standing, robust and effective community outreach
programme, providing creative projects with and for our local community all year round.
These projects are particularly aimed at young people with Adverse Childhood Experiences and/or Adverse Community Environments (ACEs) and older people at risk of isolation as they age.
We see ourselves as an arts centre without walls, creating positive change with socially minded creative programmes across our local area. These projects enhance participants’ learning, cultural and social engagement, health and wellbeing. The programme consists
of weekly multi art form workshops and performances.
All our work aims to provide access to and experience of the arts for those who may not otherwise have the opportunity; to promote wellbeing through social interaction and participation in enlightening and enjoyable cultural activities; and teaching new skills that
can support, enrich and develop their growth potential.
Activities include:
Youth work
Weekly drama workshops with EAL students/refugees/asylum seekers, including many of whom are unaccompanied minors; workshops support their English language skills, aid their transition into school, training or employment and into UK society as a whole;
Weekly drama workshops with young female refugees/asylum seekers struggling with the challenges within their familial role and gender;
Saturday workshops for young people struggling to cope with teenage life and who experience economic, social or racial and cultural barriers;
Weekly creative workshops for local young people facing adversity (e.g. SEN, low emotional resilience)
Weekly creative workshops for isolated young people i.e. young carers, teenage mothers, victims of domestic abuse
Summer holiday workshops with disadvantaged young people making the transition from primary to secondary school/adjusting to a return to school post lockdown;
Creative workshops to support young adults’ progression routes – employability and integration sessions
Older people’s work
Weekly singing workshops with the over 55s, including performances to community and health groups;
Weekly dance workshops for older people, people with dementia and their carers;
Intergenerational multicultural community performances;
Artistic programme
Theatrical productions staged primarily in Merton, performed for our local communities, in non-traditional venues such as libraries and community spaces as well as around the South East and in central London theatres;
Development of early career professionals, particularly from underrepresented groups Championing local artists and performers
