Objectives

Aphasia Support are a registered charity whose mission is to improve the wellbeing of people with aphasia and their carers, by providing tailored speech and language therapy and long term support. We want to create a world where every person with aphasia has access to support.

We have 5 key aims

  • To reduce isolation of people with aphasia
  • To improve the communication skills and wellbeing of people with aphasia
  • To raise awareness and understanding of aphasia
  • To improve the knowledge, skills and confidence of carers and volunteers in providing support to people with aphasia
  • To supplement NHS services by providing long term support for people with aphasia

Activities

Our charity matches people with aphasia with a trained volunteer speech support worker who visits the person in their own home and supports them to work on their personal communication goal using computer therapy available on iPad and android devices. We loan people with aphasia equipment which enables them to see whether the computer therapy program will benefit them. The volunteer is also trained on supported conversation techniques so there will also be time spent building a friendship with the person with aphasia. We also run group peer support session in Leeds, Wakefield, Barnsley, Halifax and Doncaster which are supported by staff and volunteers.
