Objectives

Anthem was launched in 2018 and is a charity set up to ensure that music-making can be part of every young person’s life in Wales, and can help them to achieve their potential.

Activities

“Anthem has an extremely important job to do,” said Rhian Hutchings, CEO. “Our culture has music at its heart and yet, the pathways to, and progression routes in music have been seriously eroded over the last ten years. The board has already begun its work to build a long-term, sustainable future for young people’s music in Wales, in partnership with young people and those who work with them; philanthropists, trusts; foundations and businesses. I am thrilled to be joining them at this vital time in Anthem’s development – coming as it is at a very difficult time for the whole of the music and youth sector and the country.”

Anthem was established as an independent charity in 2018 to support the Welsh Government’s long-term ambition to deliver a National Music Endowment for Wales. The steps for its establishment were overseen by the Arts Council of Wales. It was set up with an initial Welsh Government grant of £1million to provide seed funding and set up costs and objectives to:

  • Make musical opportunities more accessible to all young people aged 3-25
  • Develop musical opportunity in all genres and in all communities
  • Identify and nurture talent and ability
  • Support career pathways in music and the music industry

These objectives dovetail with the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act, supporting objectives that are based upon the notions of sustaining a vibrant culture, an equal, healthier, more resilient and prosperous Wales.
