Objectives

Alcohol plays a key role in UK society. It brings many benefits but can also cause problems when used to excess. Alcohol Research UK considers the causes of and solutions to those problems. Our charitable object is "the reduction of alcohol-related harm to individuals, families and communities".

We achieve this by improving knowledge and understanding of the uses of alcohol, the drivers that lead to harmful outcomes and the most effective ways of improving policy and practice to tackle that harm.

Activities

We fund new research via our various grant programmes and then disseminate the findings in order to influence the development of policy and practice at both a national and local level. We are the only organisation in the UK that is exclusively dedicated to funding new research around the prevention and treatment of alcohol-related harm. We are independent of both the Government and the alcohol industry.
