Objectives

Alcohol Change UK is not anti-alcohol; we are anti-alcohol harm. The scale of harm from alcohol in the UK is colossal yet so many of us don't know or understand that. This harm includes early death from over 60 alcohol-related illnesses, mental health problems, violence and abuse, safeguarding and productivity concerns in workplaces, huge costs to the NHS and criminal justice system and, in general, millions of lives not lived to the fullest.

Yet this harm is completely avoidable. Our vision is of a world free from alcohol harm. Driven by our ambition for change, our focus on seeking and telling the truth (evidence-based, not ideological), and overall our compassion, we are a positive and dynamic social change agency.

Activities

We believe that five big changes are needed to end serious alcohol harm.

  1. Increased knowledge - which is why we fund and undertake research into alcohol harm and its solutions.
  2. Better policy and regulation - which is why we campaign for governments and the alcohol industry to work to eliminate alcohol harm.
  3. A shift in culture - which is why we raise awareness of how common problem drinking actually is, to destigmatise it; and challenge 'sober shaming', supporting anyone who chooses not to drink to be free from having to justify that.
  4. Better drinking behaviours - which is why we run Dry January and other behaviour change projects, campaigns and challenges, helping heavy habitual drinkers take back control of their drinking.
  5. An improved alcohol treatment system - which is why we campaign for more funding, and a more inclusive and easier to navigate treatment system.
