Active Wales is the oldest organisation supporting older people in Wales, founded in 1939 due to the poverty and inequality retired and older people in Britain faced between the two World Wars and before the creation of the Welfare State.
We are currently at a stage in the organisation where we are looking to make Active Wales a driving force across Wales to change the narrative around retired and older people and intent to relaunch Active Wales in September.
The stigma and false perceptions surrounding older people contribute to the inequality and discrimination experienced by many older people, damaging individuals' physical and mental health and undermining their ability to engage in quality of life that civilised countries consider a human right.
As a not-for-profit organisation consisting of volunteers of all ages, we all have one thing in common. We feel passionate about improving the quality of life (on both a physical and psychological level) of older people in the 21st century, and we do things a little differently here. Whilst we have high expectations of our volunteers, we also celebrate individuality and diversity, considering everyone can contribute in some way to make society a better place. We, therefore, strive to maintain an open and honest culture where respecting and appreciating the work of our volunteers is key to achieving our goals.
