About Action for Carers
We support Surrey’s unpaid family and friend carers, of all ages, by phone, through face-to-face meetings, workshops, wellbeing events and training.
This includes information on rights and benefits, guidance on moving and handling (including back care), advocacy, and other practical and emotional help.
We also run regular Carer Hubs at 14 locations across Surrey, as well as support groups and wellbeing events, and provide a wide range of free resources.
We have specialist support available for young carers (aged 5-17), and staff working in Surrey’s hospitals. We also support and train health, social and education professionals.
Who we support
We support carers from the age of 5 who live within Surrey. Surrey is a diverse county, nearly 17% of Surrey’s population describe themselves as being from a minority ethnic group, with particularly large South East Asian, and Gypsy, Roma Traveller communities, as well as significant groups, such as Nepali (owing to Surrey’s Armed Forces role).
Our Impact - what carers say about our services
98% of carers who have used our services, would recommend us to another carer. Our feedback is continuously high. Here are some quotes from the past couple of months:
Our support includes information on rights, benefits advice, advocacy, guidance on moving and handling, support in hospital, and other practical and emotional help. We also run regular Carer Hubs at 14 locations across Surrey, as well as support groups and wellbeing events, and provide a wide range of free resources. We also signpost carers, and the people they care for to relevant specialised sources of support.
We provide young carers with individual and group support and opportunities to meet – and have fun with – other children and young people in similar positions. And we really understand how these extra responsibilities can affect daily life, schoolwork and time for friends. This year so far, we have welcomed 500 new young carers to our service, plus, we have influenced many schools to become ‘young carer friendly’ through our innovative Angel Award scheme.
