Objectives

We are helping to positively transform the lives of young men and our communities.

We help young men 18-24 currently and at risk of getting involved with the criminal justice system. This includes ex-offenders, care leavers, the homeless and the vulnerably housed.

A social action solution we help local men reclaim their responsibility by helping our young men transition effectively and safely into adulthood; to help them build a life with purpose and meaning as connected and valued members of our communities.

The Urgency?

  • Men make up 95% of the prison population
  • 90% of violent crimes and burglaries are committed by men
  • Men account for over three out of four suicides
  • 49% of care leavers under the age of 21 have had contact with the criminal justice system.

Our Impact?

  • 80% of participants either haven’t offended since or reported a much lower severity of offending behaviour since completing our programme.
  • 81% of participants showed an improvement in levels of self-esteem
  • 81% of participants experienced less conflict after completing the Quest programme than before.
  • 71% of participants saw their relationships (with family, friends and authority figures) improve.
  • The proportion of young men with severe addiction issues dropped from 51% to 14%
  • More than half the cohort was in employment after the programme, compared to just 7% before.

Activities

Our intervention works on 3 levels in support of the young men:

1. We challenge young men to understand and develop their personal narrative, looking specifically at the areas that are not working for them in their lives.

2. We provide a supportive, safe and connected space to allow new ways of being to develop.

3. We increase emotional literacy by encouraging the expression and processing of emotion.

We do this via a rite of passage weekend experience in nature followed by a 12 week 1:1 and group mentoring programme.

After the young men graduate, they have access to enduring weekly local support groups for the rest of their lives. A clear career progression paves the way to becoming a peer mentor, through to group facilitation, leadership roles and paid work within abandofbrothers.
