The Uphill Trust was set up to support grass roots education in rural western Uganda. Our beneficiaries are the staff and pupils of Uphill Junior School and the wider school community. We provide financial support for school development, pay the salaries of the teaching staff, and support a wide range of projects that enhance the educational experience of the children. We also encourage projects that contribute towards the future sustainability of the school. With our help, over 300 children are receiving good quality kindergarten and primary education, in a safe learning environment, with access to clean water, sanitation, and health care. The education of girls is especially encouraged and every child who wants to learn can join the school, even if they have no money to pay for uniform, books or food. Uphill Junior School is recognised as a 'model rural school' by the district education authority.
Our small Scottish charity raises money from a wide range of community fundraising events, individual donations, support from schools and other organisations, and from time to time we are awarded small grants for specific projects. We are a volunteer-led organisation and operate on a zero overheads basis - 100% of donations are used to support agreed projects at the school, and to pay the staff. Expanding and retaining our supporter base will be key to our continued success.
