Are you passionate about designing websites and software that's accessible for everyone? Could you help us make our three genealogy search websites easier for users of assistive technology

What will you be doing?

Accessibility is at the heart of what we do: we want everybody to be able to get the most out of our websites. We're working hard to make FreeBMD2, FreeREG and FreeCEN accessible to people with sensory or cognitive challenges or who cannot use a pointing device. Our aim is to bring our websites to AA standard (WCAG).

Examples of some of the things this role entails:

  • Developing and enhancing accessibility documentation
  • Working with staff and other volunteers to foster an accessibility-first approach to the development of our websites by:
    • working with staff and other volunteers to develop, test and refine user personas and journeys
    • providing feedback on development stories either in scrums or on GitHub
    • proofing our HTML pages for accessibility, including use of assistive technologies
  • Working with those creating communications to foster an accessibility-first approach to all communications by:
    • contributing to briefs
    • providing feedback on drafts and
    • offering other support to creators

We welcome applications from those who do not yet have experience in the full range of tasks, and will support them in learning new skills.

What are we looking for?

You will need knowledge and/or experience in:

  • Website accessibility
  • HTML5 and CSS
  • Automated and manual testing (desirable)

What difference will you make?

We believe that EVERYONE has a right to access their family’s historical records for free. Barriers to this can have a massive impact on the marginalised in society who need access to records, for example, to establish their residency status. By helping our volunteer-led charity to embed an accessibility-first approach in our digital services, you will enable Free UK Genealogy to properly fulfill our mission to provide FREE access to records for all, and not hide them behind paywalls.

Before you apply

Please provide a few paragraphs about why you're applying for and are suited to the role.
