We are looking for a talented and committed individual to become Treasurer of the Board of Trustees of Dorset Hedgehog Rescue. This role is vital in supporting the charity’s affairs so that it is governed and managed effectively.

We consider the role of Treasurer to be critical in ensuring the financial health and sustainability of our charity. As Treasurer, you will play a key role in overseeing the financial governance and health of the charity in collaboration with the Board of Trustees.

This is a voluntary role.

Primary responsibilities of the Charity Treasurer

  • Implement and maintain sound financial systems.
  • Take a lead role in ensuring the committee set annual financial budgets and plan the charity income and expenditure.
  • Provide a written financial report for every charity meeting.
  • Liaise with auditors/independent examiners regarding the production of the annual charity accounts and the treasurer’s report.
  • Maintain control of all bank accounts as authorised by the committee.
  • Execute and operate charity committee financial decisions and act as charity co-signatory.
  • Maintain control over all charity paying-in books and receipt books and to ensure their correct use.
  • In the absence of a charity box secretary, to assume responsibility for the charity network of collection boxes.
  • Coordinate financial control of all charity fundraising activities.
  • Ensure the production, monitoring and annual review of the charity’s financial risk management strategy in accordance with the charity commission’s requirements.
  • Liaise with charity officers, charity support specialist and Charity finance co-ordinator on financial affairs as necessary and alert them immediately to any possible difficulties or irregularities.
  • Ensure the retention and safekeeping of all charity financial documentation for the appropriate time as set by the charity commission.

The trustees have a statutory duty to act in the charity’s best interests and to exercise reasonable care and skill when doing so, taking specialist advice when required.

Each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions.

  • We are particularly looking for someone who has knowledge and experience in finance, who may already understand charity finance.
  • A working knowledge of Sage 50 Accounts would be helpful.
  • As a trustee, you would be able to dedicate the time to attend monthly committee meetings, which last approximately 3 hours.
  • In between meetings, there will be additional volunteer duties such as providing financial reports at committee meetings, monitoring the budget which has been set by the trustees for the year, processing payments, querying invoices, and processing Gift Aid claims.
  • Ideally, we need someone who is located within a 30-mile radius of the rescue centre

The right person will help create the future of Dorset Hedgehog Rescue and contribute to our long-term financial planning, to ensure that the needs of the hedgehogs that come into our care are met.
