Support a growing poetry movement in Surrey by coordinating our amazing volunteers. Help recruit, guide, and nurture a team that brings creativity and community spirit to life through our events and outreach programmes.

What will you be doing?

What will you be doing?

As Volunteers Co-Ordinator for the Surrey Poet Laureateship, you will play a key role in ensuring that our team of volunteers feels supported, informed, and empowered to contribute meaningfully to our events and outreach work across Surrey.

You’ll be responsible for overseeing the volunteer journey—from recruitment and onboarding to training and ongoing support. Working closely with the leadership and events teams, you’ll ensure each volunteer has a clear role, feels valued, and is well-prepared to represent the Laureateship in the community.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Recruiting and welcoming new volunteers
  • Matching volunteers to suitable roles and opportunities
  • Coordinating volunteer schedules for events and activities
  • Supporting training, briefings, and wellbeing check-ins
  • Acting as the first point of contact for volunteer queries and concerns
  • Maintaining volunteer records and feedback systems

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, building community, and making sure everyone feels included and appreciated.

What are we looking for?

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for a friendly, organised, and people-focused individual who enjoys bringing out the best in others. You don’t need to have formal HR or volunteer management experience—just a passion for teamwork, communication, and community building.

Essential skills and qualities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good organisational habits and attention to detail
  • Empathy, patience, and a supportive leadership style
  • Ability to coordinate schedules and respond to volunteer needs
  • Willingness to collaborate with other teams (e.g. events, marketing)
  • Experience managing or supporting volunteers (formal or informal)
  • Background in community work, education, events, or the arts
  • Familiarity with tools like spreadsheets, email groups, or scheduling platforms

We ask that applicants be able to reliably commute to our HQ at the Literary Institute building in Egham for key planning meetings and events. Some coordination can be done remotely.

We welcome candidates from all backgrounds—especially those who care deeply about creating welcoming, inclusive spaces where creativity and community can thrive.

What difference will you make?

What difference will you make?

As Volunteers Co-Ordinator, you’ll be the heartbeat of our team culture, ensuring that everyone who gives their time to the Surrey Poet Laureateship feels valued, supported, and part of something meaningful.

Your work will directly impact the success of our events, workshops, and outreach initiatives by making sure volunteers are well-prepared, confident, and engaged. From school workshops to literary festivals, our volunteers help bring poetry to life—and your guidance will help them shine.

You’ll be building a positive, inclusive, and empowered volunteer community that strengthens the reach, sustainability, and spirit of our work across Surrey.
